Oboe students at DePaul have an exciting learning experience that
combines comprehensive instrumental and artistic study of the solo and
orchestral repertoire with great performance opportunities in the
culturally rich city of Chicago.
Faculty
The Oboe Studio
The oboe studio at DePaul takes a holistic approach to teaching. We focus on a wide variety of musical and technical issues, such as
developing the concept of tone, pitch stability, articulation, vibrato,
and breath support. We strive to improve technical command of the oboe and bring a sense of ease and consistency to reed-making, gouging, and
cane-selection.
We have a wonderful faculty dynamic in the oboe studio. Working
together on a regular basis gives us a
greater sense of unity and direction and allows us to give
complementary, individual viewpoints. The oboe studio has a motivating
atmosphere that inspires discussion, provokes thought, and encourages
artistic individuality in each student.
Oboe Studio Class
During the weekly Oboe Class, taught by the faculty team, students receive and observe instruction regarding standard
orchestral, solo, and chamber music repertoire, as well as participate
in discussions on audition preparation and how to submit quality and
representative recordings. Oboe Class also provides the opportunity to
work in a masterclass setting with some of the leading world-class guest
oboists, such as Robert Walters (the Cleveland Orchestra), Nancy
Ambrose King (University of Michigan), and Nathan Hughes (the
Metropolitan Opera, Juilliard School).
