The jazz trombone studio focuses on developing sound, technique and the art of jazz improvisation. Students acquire a disciplined approach to sight reading, ensemble playing and their understanding of music fundamentals, all with the objective of being prepared for a professional career.
Faculty
In the Jazz Trombone studio, private lessons happen weekly. Students are expected to make consistent and steady progress, while discovering new techniques and approaches to their instruments and jazz language. Students must arrive to their lessons warmed up and with the repertoire memorized. Lessons will focus on creating transcriptions of appropriate solos, jazz etudes and chord/scale exercises as well as theory.
Students are also expected to participate in the once per quarter Jazz Trombone class. Students will play through jazz trombone choir music, perform transcriptions for each other and play a tune at the end of the evening. Sometimes, a student rhythm section with join the class. Jazz Trombone students are also highly encouraged to send in recordings for the American Trombone Workshop (ATW) and the International Trombone Association (ITA) jazz trombone solo competitions.
Ensemble Opportunities
DePaul’s Jazz studies program offers a multitude of ensembles: Jazz Orchestra, three large ensembles and multiple small jazz combos. All ensembles require an audition and have 1-2 performances every quarter. There are also classical ensemble opportunities available to Jazz Trombone students.
Instrument Doubling
Bass trombone lessons are available for those tenor trombonists wishing to broaden their experience.
Performance Opportunities
Networking with fellow students (in addition to our Jazz Faculty) is a great way to discover the many opportunities that exist in the Chicago area. In doing so, a student might find a gig and meet alumni or other professionals in the field at performances at any one of numerous venues in the city.
Recent Alumni Accomplishments
Most of our students have gone on to pursue significant freelance careers, performing across a multitude of styles and genres. Teaching is also a common component for our graduates, from the elementary through college levels. Most recently, we have had two winners of the American Trombone Workshop and a winner of the Luminarts Jazz Competition in Chicago. Combining performing and teaching with a background in composition and arranging makes the student a most versatile and employable musician!
