Jazz Trumpet

​The Jazz Trumpet studio emphasizes in-depth study of the lineage of trumpet in creative and improvised music, with a heavy emphasis on physical technique and established pedagogical methodology. Students develop a disciplined approach to the practice of improvisation, and further their understanding of musical fundamentals.

Private Lessons

Lesson topics include: scales, theory, transcription and analysis, tone production, repertoire, etudes, improvisational methods, jazz history, physical body usage, mental coaching, piano skills, and advanced metronomic exercises. Lesson plans are tailored to target the individual growth of each student, and set them on the path of continued learning and success long after graduation. Private lessons are weekly or bi-weekly (depending on credits / degree program) and students are expected to show progress towards mastery of previous lesson material.

Ensemble Opportunities

Ensembles within the school of music are an ideal way for students to explore new repertoire, develop musical concepts, and discover historically significant musicians and composers. Ensembles run the gamut of Jazz and Creative music, from Big Bands to small group jazz styles of each decade of the 20th Century and beyond.

Performance Opportunities

There are numerous opportunities in various local clubs and concert halls. Opportunities with regional big bands as well as unique showcases of music by local composers, and the ability to play with established professionals in the rich music scene of Chicago.
