Application Process: Teacher Licensure Students

The teacher licensure program at DePaul is designed to meet the needs of individuals who have earned an undergraduate music degree from an accredited institution (i.e. music performance, jazz studies, composition, sound recording) and wish to obtain Illinois State K-12 music teacher licensure.

As a Music Teacher Licensure Student, you must complete the following steps to apply to the DePaul School of Music.

​​Visiting and Non-Degree Application - December 1

Pre-screen videos - December 1 - only applicable to classical vocalists, clarinetists,  violinists and all jazz instruments.​​

​​Letters of Recommendation - December 1

​Audition Registration or recorded audition request (request a recorded audition by emailing musicadmissions@depaul.edu) - January 15

​Register for an in-person or Zoom interview - January 15

​Recorded audition submission (if approved by admissions office before January 15​​) - February 1

Apply to DePaul by December 1.

To be eligible for the Music Teacher Licensure program, you must have earned an undergraduate degree in music by the time you enroll at DePaul. A complete application to the School of Music's Teacher Licensure program includes your official college transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a live entrance audition (following the undergraduate audition requirements), and an interview with the Director of Music Education. Your online application is due by December 1

PRE-SCREEN

Classical vocalists, violinists, clarinetists and all jazz instrumentalists/vocalists:  In addition to your online application, you must submit a pre-audition screening video by ​December 1. After you submit your online application​, you may upload your pre-audition recording to our website. If invited to do so after pre-screen review, you will be able to move to the next round of auditions.

AUDITION

We encourage all applicants, if at all possible, to audition in-person. Below are the details for each format. 

a. Live audition dates are scheduled during the weekends in February. Live auditions can be scheduled here. Please visit the specific instrument page for the repertoire.

b. Recorded auditions are available by request and must be uploaded to your Blue Demon Domain (UG)/Application Portal (GR) no later than February 1. You must contact musicadmissions@depaul.edu to request a recorded audition no later than January 15. Recorded auditions must be accompanied by a short interview video submission. Please visit the specific instrument page for the repertoire and interview requirements. ​

INTERVIEW

After submitting your online application, you will be able to schedule your interview with the Music Education Coordinator.

Interviews with the Director of Music Education and auditions are required of all Teacher Licensure applicants. 

Audition results are reviewed and all decisions about acceptance are made in late March. Students are informed of the results by April 1.​

Response to an acceptance is required no later than May 1.
