Auditions: Undergraduate - Jazz Trumpet
We encourage all applicants to audition in person if possible. Audition registration will be available after prescreen results are sent. Register for an audition by January 15.
Prescreen Repertoire - Due Dec. 1
A prescreen is required for all applicants who list jazz trumpet as their primary instrument. Please review our Prescreen Information page carefully before submission.
All keys and scales are listed in concert pitch.
- Blues - Play the melody and improvise 3-4 choruses on "Billie's Bounce" (F).
- Standard (Medium tempo)– Play the melody and improvise 2 choruses on one of the following compositions: "Autumn Leaves" (G minor), "There Will Never Be Another You" (F), "Confirmation" (F), "Dewey Square" (Bb), "Have You Met Miss Jones" (F), "All the Things You Are" (Ab), "Oleo" (Bb).
- Scales
- Major scales - 2 octaves, ascending and descending. Keys of Ab, G, and B (listed in transposed keys for Bb trumpet).
- Chromatic scale - low F# to your highest comfortable note, with a short fermata on the top note.

- Blues. Choose one from the following list: "Birdlike", "Blue Monk", "Tenor Madness", "Sandu".
- Standard. Choose one from the following list: "Autumn Leaves" (G minor), "There Will Never Be Another You" (F), "Confirmation" (F), "Dewey Square" (Bb), "Have You Met Miss Jones" (F), "All the Things You Are" (Ab), "Oleo" (Bb)
- Scales (starting notes are Bb transposed) 2 octaves, 8th notes at 120 bpm, ascending and descending: Ab major, G mixolydian, Bb dorian. Play chromatic scale from lowest to highest range.
