Auditions: Undergraduate - Jazz Piano 

We encourage all applicants to audition in person if possible. Audition registration will be available after prescreen results are sent. Register for an audition by January 15.

Prescreen Repertoire - Due Dec. 1 

A prescreen is required for all applicants who list jazz piano as their primary instrument.  Please review our Prescreen Information page carefully before submission. 

Choose and perform one composition from each of the following categories and record in this format: One chorus melody, two choruses chordal accompaniment, two choruses solo improvisation, one chorus melody. At least one of these four pieces shall be performed as a solo piano performance.

• Blues (medium tempo) 

• Rhythm changes (medium tempo)

• American songbook (a standard, ballad tempo)

• Up-tempo swing (a standard or a song from the jazz lexicon)

Audition Repertoire 

• "Au Privave" (or "C-Jam Blues", "Bag's Groove", "Billie's Bounce", "Now's The Time", "Blue Monk", "Blues For Alice") 

  • One chorus melody, two choruses comping, and four choruses solo improvisation

• Choose one composition from each of the following lists of styles to be performed as a solo piano performance or to be performed with a bass and drum recording (be prepared for both possibilities):

  • Ballad (these are possible selections, or choose your own)

    • "My Foolish Heart" (Young)

    • "Almost Like Being in Love" (Lowe/Lerner)

    • "Angel Eyes" (Dennis/Brent)

  • Medium tempo waltz

    • "Up Jumped Spring" (Hubbard)  

    • "Little B’s Poem" (Hutcherson)

    • "Bluesette" (Thielemans)

  • Uptempo

    • "Four" (Davis)

    • "Groovin' High" (Gillespie)

    • "Hot House" (Dameron)
