Prescreen Repertoire - Due Dec. 1
A prescreen is required for all applicants who list jazz trombone as their primary instrument. Please review our Prescreen Information page carefully before submission.
Submit scales and standards each as separate videos, totaling 12 minutes or less in length.
- Scales. two octaves, ascending and descending, legato:
- Ab natural minor
- Db whole/half diminished
- C altered scale (diminished whole tone)
- Standards. Perform three selections of varied tempos and styles (e.g. ballad, swing, bossa, straight eighth).
Audition Repertoire
- Scales. All two octaves, ascending and descending, legato. To be chosen from the following:
- C Chromatic
- B Dorian
- Db half/whole diminished
- Bb altered scale (diminished whole tone)
- Transcription. Perform a memorized, self-made transcription along to the source recording. Transcription should be of moderate length; for example: at least two choruses of a 32 bar standard or at least four choruses of a blues. Applicants are not limited to these song forms.
- Compositions. Prepare one tune from each category listed below, or substitute comparable works demonstrating similar skill. Applicants must choose different tunes for their prescreen and live auditions. Backing tracks will be provided, or you may use your own.
- Blues (medium tempo). Play the melody and improvise four choruses.
- "Relaxin' at the Camarillo" (C)
- "Straight, No Chaser" (F)
- "Bloomdido" (Bb)
- "Sandu" (Eb)
- Jazz Standard (medium up tempo). Play the melody and improvise 2-3 choruses.
- Rhythm changes ("Oleo", "Moose the Mooche", "Anthropology", etc.)
- "I'll Remember April" (G)
- "It's You or No One" (F)
- "Cherokee" (Bb)
- "Woody 'N You" (Db)
- "Airegin" (F minor)
- Ballad. Play the melody and improvise one chorus.
- Blues (medium tempo). Play the melody and improvise four choruses.
