Sound Recording Technology

​​​​​​The DePaul Sound Recording Technology (SRT) program is a four-year program designed to prepare students for a career in the audio industry by developing a solid foundation of traditional musical skills and extensive training in contemporary music technology. The SRT program is contained in the School of Music and culminates in a Bachelor of Science in music with emphasis in sound recording technology.

Students enter the SRT program on a performance track or an audio technology track. All SRT students take a rigorous curriculum of music theory, electronics, synthesis, math, and recording. Students in a performance track take applied lessons and play in ensembles; students in the audio technology track have performance opportunities in their studio classes and substitute audio classes in TV broadcast, game audio, film scoring, and music business for applied lessons and ensembles.

SRT Tracks

There are two application tracks for Sound Recording Technology Majors:

Performance Track: Sound Recording Technology applicants pursuing a performance track must play an entrance audition, take at least one year of applied lessons and participate in ensembles for two years. For audition requirements, please refer to the specific instrument’s audition repertoire. Performance track applicants must also submit a portfolio, as outlined here.
Audio Technology Track (non-performance track): The audio technology track is for students that might not have had access to classical or jazz performance experience, but still want the opportunity to work in the audio industry. 
In place of an audition, applicants pursuing the audio technology track must submit:
1. Brief written description of why they want to study Sound Recording Technology. 
2. Performance video that demonstrates their musical understanding and ability. 
3. Portfolio
4. Theory diagnostic test

Sound Recording Technology Portfolios
Undergraduate applicants intending to major in Sound Recording Technology must submit a portfolio. Submissions may include any recording or video projects that you have created or participated in which exhibit an understanding of music, audio, and multimedia recording and production. Portfolios should be submitted through our upload page, under "Portfolio Submission", By February 1. Students must also pass a theory diagnostic test.

One of the strengths of the DePaul Sound Recording Technology program is our involvement in the musical life of the city of Chicago. In addition to holding classes off-campus at commercial facilities, SRT students work and play in Chicago studios and play in Chicago clubs. The wealth of local talent creates exceptional recording opportunities.

Sound Recording Technology graduates are currently working in varied positions across the country and around the world. Here's just a sampling of what our alumni are doing.

  • Kate Marciniak, class of 2005, is now a supervisor and an animation sound designer for Warner Brothers.
  • Brian Bullard, class of 2006, is a mixer for Universal Pictures, mixing trailers and promos for motion pictures.
  • Mike Malarkey, class of 2009, is a free-lance composer and producer with credits that include Young Money Records, CBS Sports, Vice, and the History Channel.
  • Jeremy Bircher, class of 2008, is a cofounder and producer at Space Camp Creative, creators of the international Coca Cola “Taste the Feeling” campaign.
  • Emmett Farley, class of 2008, is an engineer and producer in NY and is musical director for MNDR who recently performed on the Dave Letterman show.
  • Rob Bochnik, class of 1996, plays guitar with The Frames, and The Swell Season, and has written and toured with Markta Irglov, star of the movie Once.
  • Juliana Armbrust, class of 2002, is an audio mixer for the Steve Harvey show, produced in Chicago.
  • Eric Wedemeyer, class of 2011, is a sound designer for the Call of Duty video games.
  • Shane Hendrickson, class of 2010, is an engineer at I.V. Lab studio in Chicago.
  • Peter Mokran, class of 1990, has engineered and mixed numerous platinum records with artists including R. Kelly, Prince, The Flaming Lips, N Sync, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, and Keisha Cole.
  • Michael Tutaj, class of 1998, is an award winning designer of projections and sound for theater with Broadway credits.
  • Molly Regan, class of 2000, is a project audio engineer for Fisher Price, creating and programming sounds for toys.
  • Nikolas Herron, class of 2005, is a live audio engineer for PSAV, working for clients including the Miami Heat and the Miami Dolphins.
  • Rob Klegon, class of 2004, is an associate manager and product specialist for the Shure Corporation.
  • Dave Cerra, class of 1991, also works at Shure as director of engineering in the speech and broadcast wireless group.
  • Jeff Cline, class of 1991, is Division Head of the Music Industry Division, and Coordinator of the Recording Technology Program at The University of Memphis.
  • Ed Tinley, class of 1995, teaches audio engineering at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.
  • Dennis Czajkowski, class of 1994, is the manager of broadcast operation at DIRECTV.
  • Jeff Conary, class of 2003, is a sound designer for video games at Wargaming Chicago-Baltimore.
  • Craig Anderson, class of 1996, is founder and CEO of  Craigman Digital, Inc., a music industry-based company specializing in audio and video production, archiving and master delivery.
  • Mike Greenberg, class of 1992, is a post production editor and mixer at Margarita Mix studios in the Los Angeles area.
  • Brian Gier, class of 1996, is technologist at the DePaul University School of Music.
  • Brian Jensen, class of 1993, is an audio mixer at Chace Audio specializing in audio restoration.
  • Charles Lipper, class of 2001 is a voice over talent and the owner of Critical Noise Lab, a studio in the Washington DC area.
  • Matt Lindenberger, class of 2000, is a VP of engineering at Phunware.
  • Grant Martin, class of 1997, is a sound designer and mixer for goDaddy in Phoenix, Arizona.
  • Mary Mazurek, class of 1992, is an engineer and producer for WFMT and teaches audio at Columbia College in Chicago.
  • Chris Novak, class of 2002, is a senior iOS developer at GREE Inc, a game development company.
  • Nick Sjostrom, class of 2001, is an audio mixer and sound designer for Clean Cuts music in the Baltimore, Maryland area.
  • Dan Steinman, class of 1999, is an instructor of sound recording at DePaul University.
