Applied Trumpet

Bill Denton is the current Principal Trumpet with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has performed with the Grant Park Orchestra and as Principal Trumpet of the Chicago Philharmonic. In the four years prior to moving to Chicago, he was the 2nd/Assistant Principal Trumpet with the Alabama Symphony in Birmingham. Before that he was Principal Trumpet with the Hilton Head Symphony and the Savannah Orchestra. He holds a bachelors degree in trumpet performance from Wichita State University and a masters degree from Arizona State University in Tempe. In 2006 he was awarded a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree with a minor in music composition from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. His primary teachers include Walter Myers, David Hickman, and James Thompson. He served in the U.S. Army full-time for eight years performing with the Army Field Band. He still serves as a reservist in the 313th Army Band in Birmingham Alabama. Bill was a band director for five years, and has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Augusta State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, and the University of South Carolina. His compositions have been performed at the International Trombone Association annual conference and at many recitals in the Birmingham area. He is a member of ASCAP and the Birmingham Art Music Alliance.
