ILMEA All-State Choral Workshop

Illinois High School singers are invited to a free choral workshop covering the ILMEA All-State selections for the All-State Choir auditions. The program will consist of audition tips, strategies, sectionals, full rehearsals and an informal performance with DePaul Choir members.

Meet Your Conductors

Eric Esparza

Eric Esparza
Dr. Eric Esparza is the Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Area Coordinator at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, where he conducts the DePaul Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and teaches courses in Choral Music. Dr. Esparza is also the Founder, Artistic Director, and Conductor of International Voices Houston. Previously, he served on the music faculty of Sam Houston State University School as conductor of the Concert Choir, and teacher of voice, diction, and music theory. Dr. Esparza was also Artistic Director of the United Nations Association International Choir, and Director of Ministries at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

Originally from San Antonio, Texas, he holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he studied with Dr. Joyce Farwell and Maestro Thomas Jaber. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Arts Administration from Florida State University where, he was a University Fellow and served as Assistant Conductor of the Florida State University Opera. Dr. Esparza earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from Boston University, where he studied with Dr. Ann Howard Jones. He remains active internationally as a singer, conductor, and music editor.

David R. Jensen

David Jensen
David R. Jensen is in his 22nd year as the director of choirs at Prairie Ridge High School. In those years the program has grown from 90 to 300 students, serving over 20 percent of the student body. The music curriculum offers Beginning Treble and Bass Choirs, Mixed Choir, Bel Canto Women’s Ensemble, A Cappella Choir, Introductory and AP Music Theory, Dual-Credit Music Appreciation, two extracurricular madrigal ensembles, as well as a full slate of instrumental offerings. The Prairie Ridge A Cappella Choir, an auditioned curricular ensemble, has twice been selected to perform at the Illinois Music Education Association All-State Conference (2003 and 2015), as well at the 2017 IL-ACDA Fall Convention. Upcoming highlights include a performance with Dr. Eric Johnson & the professional ensemble Cor Cantiamo in November, and a performance with Dr. Eduardo Garcia Novelli and the choirs of Carthage College at Orchestra Hall on December 13th. Prior to his tenure at Prairie Ridge, Mr. Jensen attended Illinois State University, where he completed his undergraduate studies. He has since completed master’s degrees from North Central College (M.A. Ed.), VanderCook College of Music (M.M. Ed.), and Northern Illinois University (Ed.S). David served 11 years as Fine Arts Department co-chair, and currently holds the position of assistant division leader of humanities. Other responsibilities at the school include auditorium coordinator, director of the madrigal dinners, and director of the spring musical. He has served as guest conductor at several regional festivals, and is active as an arranger and composer. David lives in Crystal Lake with his wife Sarah and their five children, ages 12 to 19.​
