About

Chattanooga native Monte Coulter, IV graduated from the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, where he performed in the symphonic band program, and was a clarinetist in the Chattanooga Symphony Youth orchestra under the baton of Gary Wilkes and Kayoko Dan. While a high school student, Monte was a three-time all-state musician, performing in the all-state orchestra for Allen Tinkham and Giancarlo Guerrero. He also attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival during both high school and college, where he performed under Robert Moody and Joanne Falleta and studied with Chad Burrow.

Monte was a cum laude graduate of the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, where he studied with Bil Jackson. While at Blair, he performed and studied with Robin Fountain, Thomas Verrier, and John Concklin, and made two recordings with the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony. Monte also traveled to Aix en Provence, France with a Blair student woodwind quintet to study with members of the Berlin Philharmonic and Paris Orchestra, including Fergus McWilliam, Michael Hasel, and Philippe Berrod.

Mr. Coulter was a graduate teaching assistant under Dr. Lauren Jacobson at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where he earned a master’s degree in clarinet performance in 2021, winning the “Outstanding Woodwind Student” award. There, he was inducted into the Gamma Xi chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda.

Mr. Coulter received a performer’s certificate from DePaul University in 2024, where he studied with Julie DeRoche, Michael Rusinek, and Wagner Campos. While at DePaul, he served as the clarinet studio assistant to Professor DeRoche as well as a teaching artist for DePaul’s Community Music Division, where he ultimately joined the faculty in the spring of 2024.

Monte has performed in master classes with Jose Franch-Ballester, Anthony McGill, Mark Nuccio, and Kimberley Cole Luevano. He has also performed with the Colorado Dance Theatre under Russell Guyver, the Nashville Sinfonietta under Dean Whiteside, and the Chattanooga Symphony under Kayoko Dan.
