Dalcroze Workshop

Dalcroze Education is a unique, exciting, and powerful way of knowing music through the body. The Dalcroze approach explores musical concepts through social and interactive methods that invite students to trust their ideas and develop their own intuitions. 

  • ​Eurhythmics courses nurture the imagination and unlock creativity through rhythmic movement and active listening. 
  • Solfège plays a key role in training the eyes and ears to instantly respond to musical notation. 
Improvisation engages the spirit of play to facilitate enlivened music making according to the student’s own invention: in movement, with the voice, or at an instrument. 

  • Dalcroze study makes music vivid for everyone, from young beginners though adult professionals. 
Throughout this introductory 5-day workshop, the fundamental experiences that establish the philosophy of a Jaques-Dalcroze Education will be explored. Further, curriculum and textbooks that correspond to the Dalcroze School of the Rockies, an accredited Dalcroze teacher training program by the Dalcroze Society of America (DSA) will be used.

The instructors for this program will be Dr. Jeremy Dittus, Diplôme Supérieur and Dr. Eunjin Lee, License candidate and Certificate. 

Dr. Jeremy Dittus, Diplôme Supérieur Jaques-Dalcroze enjoys a career as a pianist, theorist, and Dalcroze Education specialist. An avid recitalist, he has performed solo and chamber programs and presented Dalcroze masterclasses throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and South East Asia. He currently directs the Dalcroze School of the Rockies Dalcroze Academy teacher-training center at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He also serves on the faculty of Hope College in Holland, Michigan where he teaches Dalcroze Eurhythmics for undergraduate music majors. Recently, he spearheaded a Dalcroze program for the National Children’s Chorus and oversees their team of dedicated Dalcroze instructors across the United States.  Read the full biography for Dr. Dittus here. 

Dr. Eunjin Lee received her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Perfomance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With a strong background in pedagogical studies, Dr. Lee has expanded her research interest to Dalcroze Education and the Suzuki method, studying and presenting at national and international workshops,including the Suzuki Association of the Americas Conference in Minnesota, the Yale Graduate Music Symposium and the Illinois State Music Teachers Association’s annual conference. She earned the Dalcroze™ Certificate and is now pursuing Dalcroze™ License studying with Dr. Jeremy Dittus from Dalcroze School of the Rockies. She also studied with internationally known Dalcroze master teachers including Eiko Ishizuka, Laetitia-Disseix Berger, Lisa Parker, Karin Greenhead, Dr. Louise Mathieu, and Monica Dale. She served as a national board member of the Dalcroze Society of America. She taught graduate piano pedagogy courses as the coordinator of the UIUC’s Piano Laboratory Program. She also teaches applied piano and Dalcroze group classes to children and adults of all ages as a guest lecturer in universities and summer festivals, including Hope College, Andrews University, Northern Illinois University, Illinois Summer Youth Music, PhoenixPhest, and Suzuki Association of Wisconsin's Winter Retreat. Active as a soloist and chamber musician, Dr. Lee has performed at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall; at the Krannert Center in Champaign, Illinois; the Nice Conservatoire, France; and at major concerts halls in Korea including Kumho Art Hall and Sejong Center. Featured as a soloist with both the UIUC Symphony and the New Music Ensemble, she also performs as a collaborative pianist with music faculty members at UIUC.

The following textbook will be required for the workshop: Embodying Music:  A Textbook for Dalcroze Teacher Training towards the Dalcroze Certificate Ebook, by Dr. Jeremy Dittus, Diplôme Supérieur (available for purchase here). All students will be required to have the current edition of Embodying Music.  You can use the textbook to help prepare yourself for some of the important elements of the course, including piano improvisation.  Assigned readings and handouts given before and during the course

Dalcroze Certification is divided into 3 Levels. Level I is the Introductory Credential; Level II is the Applied Credential; and Level III is the internationally recognized Dalcroze Certificate. To finish each level, you must pass examinations in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Solfège, and Improvisation. Levels II and III also have examinations in Pedagogy and possibly Plastique Animée. Dalcroze Certification allows it’s holder to offer introductory coursework in Dalcroze Education. As this is the first year that we will be offering coursework at DePaul, we won’t offer exams towards Dalcroze Certification; however, students can take their experiences and apply them towards Certification at the Dalcroze School of the Rockies or other DSA accredited schools.
