Summer Residency for New Music

Hosted by Ensemble Dal Niente and DePaul University

Sunday, July 25 - Saturday, July 31, 2021
Ensemble Dal Niente

The DePaul University School of Music announces a week-long virtual Summer Residency for New Music in collaboration with the acclaimed new music chamber group Ensemble Dal Niente and featuring distinguished guest composer Wang Lu

During this virtual week, young composers will have opportunities to collaborate on new projects, work with Ensemble Dal Niente musicians, participate in master classes and receive individualized feedback.

The composition program includes lessons with DePaul faculty members Osnat Netzer and Christopher Wendell Jones and guest composer Wang Lu. All students will participate in lectures, demonstrations and workshops with DePaul faculty and members of Ensemble Dal Niente.

The residency will have four main components distributed across the duration of the week: lessons, lectures, rehearsals and a performance. Additionally, each participant will be invited to compose a quartet with an assigned instrumentation for Ensemble Dal Niente. The ensemble will rehearse each piece twice on location at DePaul, and the composers will join the rehearsals remotely via Zoom. This will give the composers the opportunity to interact with the musicians, receive feedback and offer comments. Each session will also be recorded, and recordings will be made available to the composers. At the end of the week, the musicians will record the pieces for a live-stream concert, and composers will receive high-quality audio recordings of performances of their music.

Current undergraduate and graduate-level student composers are encouraged to apply.

Applications have closed for this program.
