Summer Residency for New Music

Hosted by Ensemble Dal Niente and DePaul University

Monday, July 6 - Sunday, July 12, 2020
Ensemble Dal Niente

The DePaul University School of Music announces a week-long Summer Residency for New Music in collaboration with the acclaimed new music chamber group Ensemble Dal Niente and featuring distinguished guest composer Hilda Paredes.  During this newly re-designed virtual week, young composers will have opportunities to collaborate on new projects, work with Ensemble Dal Niente musicians, participate in master classes and receive individualized feedback.

The composition program includes lessons with DePaul faculty members Osnat Netzer, Fred Gifford and Christopher Wendell Jones, as well as with guest composer, Hilda Paredes. The performance program includes lessons, coaching and rehearsals with members of Ensemble Dal Niente.   All students will participate in lectures, demonstrations and workshops with DePaul faculty and members of Ensemble Dal Niente.

The residency will have four main components distributed across the duration of the week: lessons, lectures, rehearsals and a performance.  Additionally, each participant will be invited to compose a quartet with an assigned instrumentation for Ensemble Dal Niente.  The ensemble will rehearse each piece twice on location at DePaul, and the composers will join the rehearsals remotely via Zoom. This will give the composers the opportunity to interact with the musicians, receive feedback and offer comments. Each session will also be recorded, and recordings will be made available to the composers. At the end of the week, the musicians will record the pieces and  each composer will receive high-quality audio recordings of performances of his/her music.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the residency this summer!
