Programs of Study
Undergraduate
The School of Music offers undergraduate degree programs in composition, jazz studies, music education, music performance, performing arts management, and sound recording technology. Entering students declare an intent to major and enroll in core music studies-applied music, ensembles, music theory, music history, aural skills, keyboard skills, conducting, and world music/jazz-taken in conjunction with liberal studies courses. After the first year, students petition to major in a field of study; once accepted, they enroll in specialization courses. If a student wishes to double major or minor in another area of study, the degree program may extend longer than the typical four years. All undergraduate students must earn a minimum of 192 quarter hours.
Graduate
Graduate degrees are granted in composition, jazz studies, music education, and music performance. All Masters of Music students enroll in core studies in music history, theory, and research, along with courses in the students' area of specialization. A minimum of 44 quarter hours of graduate credit, taken over a two-year period, is required to complete the Master of Music degree.
Teacher Certification Program
DePaul offers a program in which students can earn Illinois State K-12 music teacher certification. Applicants need to have earned a bachelors degree in music from an accredited institution, pass an audition on their major instrument, and interview with the music education department chair. The teacher certification program consists of courses in music education, education, and liberal studies, which fulfill the Illinois state teacher certification requirements. Although the length of the program may vary slightly, students generally can complete the program in four quarters, with an additional summer quarter if needed.
