Performing Arts Management

The DePaul University Performing Arts Management Program is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students for careers in the multi-faceted and extensive industry embracing not-for-profit arts administration (orchestra, symphony, opera, dance, theatre) and commercial music management (recording industry, artist representation, music publishing and distribution, product merchandising, concert promotion). In collaboration with the College of Commerce and The Theatre School, this newly developed program has evolved from the previous Music Business Program with a greater defined focus that best meets the mission of the School of Music. The program has been designed to provide students a broad understanding of the performing arts industry; insight into the theories and principles associated with arts management; and a proficiency in the practical application of necessary business skills.

The Performing Arts Management Program leads to a Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in Performing Arts Management and minor in Business Administration.

In addition to the rigorous audition process and core curriculum in musicianship and applied music which exists for all undergraduate music programs, students in Performing Arts Management will undertake courses in Music Business, Legal Issues in Music, Career Development, Marketing, Management, Accounting, Statistics, and Economics. A significant element to the Performing Arts Management Program is an experiential component in the form of an Internship at one of numerous approved companies or organizations. Internships have been completed at such places as Lyric Opera, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Grant Park Music Festival, EMI Records, and various independent music labels and radio stations.

Alan Salzenstein, coordinator of the Performing Arts Management Program, is a veteran arts administrator, theatrical producer and presenter, entertainment attorney, and arts educator having worked in various aspects of arts management and education for the past twenty years.

Each undergraduate music degree requires a select number of courses from the liberal studies domains; Click Here to view the requirements for each degree program.
