Music Education
DePaul's music education specialization combines a distinguished faculty with a challenging curriculum designed to develop the professional competencies necessary for a successful career as a music educator. There are three music education programs:
1) The undergraduate music education and teacher certification programs emphasize thorough preparation in the fundamentals of music. Students learn how to structure successful learning experiences for others as they become familiar with classroom and rehearsal techniques. In addition, music education students are systematically introduced to principles and strategies of teaching voice, instruments, and ensembles and to the literature appropriate for various levels of orchestra, band, chorus, and general music education.
Along with class work, practical experiences are an integral part of the program. Students learn by example through observation of professional music educators at work both at DePaul and in the community at large. Actual teaching experiences begin in the junior year when students teach music to Chicago Public School children. The program culminates with elementary and secondary student teaching experiences, leading to Illinois K-12 Music Certification. Prior to graduation, the School of Music's Office of Career Planning and Placement works closely with students to prepare a file that will be used in the job application process. DePaul's job placement record is outstanding due to our extensive network of support within the school community.
2) The teacher certification program is designed to meet the needs of students who have already earned undergraduate music degrees in another field and wish to obtain Illinois State Certification. Further information on the teacher certification program can be obtained through the admissions office.
3) The graduate music education program offers practicing music teachers (teachers with at least one year of teaching experience) the opportunity to earn a masters degree in a little over two years during summers and evening classes. Educational theory and practice merge throughout course work and students have a great deal of flexibility in choosing elective areas of study. The program culminates with a final paper or project, allowing the students the chance to research an area of special interest.
