Suzuki Instruction
Suzuki instruction is offered in violin, viola, cello, piano, flute and guitar. Developed in the 1950s by Japanese educator Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, this well-established pedagogical approach is based on the premise that talent can be developed and nurtured in any child. The cornerstone of Suzuki’s “mother tongue” method is that children can learn music in much the same way they learn to speak their native language–through listening, imitation, repetition and a caring and supportive environment. The key elements of the Suzuki method include beginning at an early age, daily listening to appropriate models of performance, creative repetition, step-by-step mastery and encouragement.
Parents actively participate in the educational process by attending all lessons and classes, taking detailed notes and supervising at-home preparation and practice. A cooperative relationship between teacher, parent and student is essential for a successful Suzuki experience. Students may start the program at five years of age.
Group classes are an integral part of the Suzuki program. In addition to weekly private lessons, students and parents attend weekly or bi-weekly group classes each quarter. The group lesson focuses on performance of the common repertory, stage presence, ensemble skills, memory and ear training games, and music reading concepts. Students benefit from the social and motivational rewards gained from interacting with their peers in a group setting. Piano students explore the four-hand literature as part of the group class curriculum. More advanced students have the opportunity to enroll in the following supplemental classes: jazz, accompanying and chamber music. Students must have their own instruments. A traditional piano is required for Suzuki piano students.
The Suzuki program includes:
- Weekly individual instruction
(technique, musicianship, and note reading at child’s readiness) - Group classes
- Performance opportunities
