Affable, good-natured and engaging, Christian Bourdon has a commanding presence and reserved calm that belies his youth. At only 12 years of age, Bourdon has already appeared as a soloist with the Oistrach Symphony Orchestra as part of the Community Music Division’s Concerto Festival for Young Performers and was recently asked to compete at the Illinois State Music Teachers Association Annual Conference after receiving high marks in the regional competition. Christian has played piano for six years and is a student of Regina Syrkin.
Q: Why did you choose to study the piano?
It wasn't really me. My parents thought it would be a good activity. (I started six years ago). Later on I realized I was pretty good.
Q: What is your favorite piece or composer?
I really like Chopin, especially the waltzes. I’m playing Waltz 5, Opus 42 now. I like his history. It’s interesting the way he had to move from home. His works are so expressive and his life ties in with mine. My dad is French and I’m French. We share that personal heritage.
Q: What is a typical day like for you?
I have a lot of practicing to do. Usually I play for three hours a day. I wake up at 7 a.m., play from 7:30 to 8:45 and then go to school. I then practice another two hours after school.
Q: What other music activities have you participated in?
I’ve thought about composing. I sing different tunes and try to write them down.
Q: Do you have any musical experiences that stand out in your mind?
I was really excited for the [DePaul Community Music Division’s] Concerto Competition. I was really young and I got nervous but I liked the benefits of thinking about it afterwards.
