Guitar Auditions
Undergraduate guitar applicants wishing to perform a classical guitar audition should be prepared to perform one or two movements from a suite by Bach; preludes, theme and variations or sonatas by Sor, Giuliani, Ponce, Torroba, Turina, Villa-Lobos, Brouwer or similar level; and etudes by Carcassi, Sor, Brouwer or Villa-Lobos.
All undergraduate guitar applicants will take a diagnostic theory exam covering pitch recognition, key signatures, major and minor scales, intervals, triads and basic rhythm figure on the day of their audition.
Graduate guitar applicants wishing to perform a classical guitar audition should be prepared to perform contrasting movements from a Bach lute suite; a 19th-century theme and variations, sonata or fantasy by Sor, Giuliani, Mertz, or Regondi; a major 20th-century work by Britten, Henze, Ginastera, Walton, or Brouwer; and one movement of a concerto by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Villa-lobos, Ponce, or similar level.
Prospective Jazz Studies guitar majors or students wishing to participate in jazz performing groups at DePaul University should be prepared to sight-read two selections of contrasting tempos and styles from the Jamey Aebersold Play-A-Long Series, with the accompaniment of the compact disc recording. For each selection you are to (A) perform/embellish the melody for one chorus, (B) provide appropriate accompaniment for one chorus, and (C) improvise for two choruses. Also, sight-read a portion of a big band chart or jazz etude, at tempo, with the use of a metronome.
