Admissions FAQ's - Programs
Q: What undergraduate degree programs are offered?
A: We offer Bachelor of Music degrees in Performance, Composition, Jazz Studies,
Performing Arts Management, and Music Education. Our Sound Recording Technology
program culminates in a Bachelor of Science in Music with emphasis in Elective
Studies in Electrical Engineering. We also offer a Bachelor of Arts in Music.
Our Teacher Certification program is a post-Bachelors program that culminates in
certification in Music Education, designed for students who have already
completed a Music degree.
Q: What graduate degree
programs are offered?
A: We offer Master of Music degrees in Performance, Composition, Music
Education, and Jazz Studies (emphasis in Performance or Composition).
Additionally, we have a Post-Masters Certificate in Performance for study beyond
the Masters level.
Q: When do I choose my
major?
A: Students in the School of Music do not officially petition for their major
until the end of their freshman year at the earliest and the end of their
sophomore year at the latest.
Q: Is it possible to
double major or dual-degree?
A: Double majors (two major programs within the School) or dual-degrees (one
major program within the School, one in another School or College within the
University) are indeed possible. However, these are only recommended for
students that have demonstrated strong academic skills and are willing to attend
DePaul for five years rather than four.
Q: Can I minor in music?
A: The School of Music does not offer minors. The closest to a minor would be
our BA Music degree. The requirements for the BA degree are more academically
oriented than the BM degrees and may fit in better with a major program from
another School or College within the University.
Q: Can I register for
music classes if I'm not a music major?
A: Certain undergraduate classes and all ensembles are open to registration for
DePaul students not enrolled in the School of Music. These classes are
designated as "Arts and Literature" in the current schedule of courses. All
other undergraduate and all graduate courses are limited to students enrolled in
the School of Music. Non-music majors wishing to participate in ensembles must
be able to demonstrate they are capable of playing at the level of our ensemble,
through the competitive placement audition held each fall.
Q: Can I participate in
ensembles if I'm not a music major?
A: The ensemble auditions are open to all University students and typically
occur during the first few days before Fall Quarter classes start. There will be
signup sheets on the first-floor bulletin board at the School.
Q: Do you have a Musical
Theatre program?
A: The School does not officially have a Musical Theatre program. However, with
a required two-quarter sequence of Techniques of the Musical Stage in the Vocal
Performance major, our two opera productions every year, and faculty that
perform in productions around the world, there are ample opportunities for
students to participate and gain experience in musical theatre.
Q: Can I study vocal pop,
Latin, or jazz?
A: The vocal program at DePaul is classically oriented, preparing students for
success in a broad range of genres and fields. Currently, there are no
substantial opportunities at the School for students wishing to focus on vocal
pop, Latin, or jazz.
Q: Can I take lessons if
I'm not a music major?
A: Lessons for individuals not enrolled in the School of Music are offered by
our
Community Music Division. Please contact them at 773-325-7262.
