Admissions FAQ's - Auditions
Q: When and where will the auditions
be held?
A: The auditions will be held on campus in January and February, most likely on
the weekends.
Q: Can I submit a tape
instead of an in-person audition?
A: All applicants currently residing within the continental U.S. must come to
Chicago for the audition; we have no regional auditions. Applicants outside of
the continental U.S. (i.e., foreign applicants, residents of Hawaii, Alaska,
Puerto Rico, etc.) may submit a recording (audio cassette or compact disc) which
is due February 15th.
Q: How do I schedule an
audition?
A: When we have received your application your will be sent a user name and
password enabling you to use our web site,
music.depaul.edu/auditions to schedule your audition date and time. If you
prefer, you may call us at 773-325-7444 and we will help you with the process.
Q: Is the audition process different
for vocalists?
A: Yes, you must first submit a pre-audition recording by December 15th. After
being favorably reviewed, you will be invited to schedule an on-campus audition.
Q: What should I prepare
for the audition?
A: All audition requirements are listed at this link
http://music.depaul.edu/admissions/3.html. Some instruments require
specific pieces or a choice from specific pieces; other instruments leave it to
the applicant to decide which pieces best showcase his/her talent. Be sure you
read the specific requirements for your instrument carefully.
Q: Can I audition on more
than one instrument?
A: Yes, you may. However, we strongly recommend that you audition on your
primary instrument only, unless you have very strong skills on more than one
instrument.
Q: Is an audition required
for the Performing Arts Management and/or Sound Recording Technology programs?
A: An audition is required of all undergraduate applicants to the School of
Music, regardless of intended major.
Q: Are the auditions the
same for potential non-performance majors and performance majors?
A: Yes, the audition requirements for each instrumental or vocal category are
the same regardless of one's intended major. However, the faculty will usually
take into consideration one's intended major. An applicant expressing an
intention to major in Sound Recording Technology or Performing Arts Management
will still have to demonstrate strong musical skills but may not be required to
demonstrate that they have the potential to have a career as a performer.
Q: What if I don't play an
instrument and don't sing but am still interested in the Music Business and/or
Sound Recording Technology programs?
A: Our audition process is extremely competitive; it is unlikely that you will
be able to pass the audition with no prior musical experience or training.
Q: I'm planning to pursue
the Jazz Studies program, do I still have to pass a classical audition?
A: All undergraduate applicants, except guitarists, must pass a classical
audition. Those applicants considering pursuing the Jazz Studies major may also
take a jazz audition, which can typically be scheduled on the same day.
Guitarists take either a classical or a jazz audition. Graduate students for the
Jazz Studies program need only pass a jazz audition.
