Studio Features: Saxophone

Saxophone students at DePaul are exposed to a wide range of opportunities and experiences. Students attend weekly studio classes where they are exposed to new techniques, repertoire and master teachers. All saxophonists learn the fundamentals of proper playing techniques and may participate in saxophone ensembles, jazz combos, large jazz ensembles, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony and more. The diverse offerings enable each student to chose and hone the craft or focus of their choice in a supportive, engaging and challenging environment.

Faculty

The Classical Saxophone Studio

The goals of the saxophone studio at DePaul are:
1. To increase one’s musicianship & technical facility including, range, sound, rhythm, sight-reading, articulations, posture, speed, extended techniques, intonation, and overall versatility.
2. To have a firm knowledge of the repertoire written for saxophone. It is important to know for whom the pieces were written, when they were published, theoretical analysis (if needed), and biographical information on composers.
3. To know prominent figures who have influenced and continue to influence the growth of the saxophone in the classical medium including teachers, composers and performers.

Saxophone students are required to perform one solo work each quarter in a master class or performance setting. Open feedback is provided by faculty members and students.
