Music Management & Recruitment Workshops

DePaul School of Music presents two workshops of practical information specifically designed for new and recently appointed music administrators, including music department chairs, coordinators, division heads, directors and deans.

These workshops are a one-of-a-kind opportunity for you to meet and network with music management professionals from across the nation. Being a college or university music manager can often be a lonely proposition. Not many other people face the same triumphs and challenges that you do. Take this opportunity to come together with your colleagues for a summertime break and recharge your batteries in Chicago.

Music Management Workshop: June 18 – 22, 2012.

Throughout the week, DePaul University School of Music administrators will share their expertise on these vital topics:

Management Concepts
Learn the basic principles of operations management and leadership as they apply to running a music unit. Discover the importance of efficiency in the music unit. What’s the best way to organize your unit?

Planning in the Music Unit
Does your unit have a mission? If so, has the unit’s mission and purpose been well defined? What are the best ways to establish both short and long term goals and objectives?

Curriculum
As you know, a curriculum should never be static; it’s a dynamic process. Learn tried-and-true techniques for formulation, implementation and evaluation of your curriculum. What should you consider when designing or redesigning your program?

Budget
Creating a budget is essential to allocating scarce resources. Your budget must be able to adapt to last minute changes. What are the benefits to constructing the budget from the ground up? Once it’s built, how can you manage your budget?

Legal Issues
All organizations face the threat of litigation. You’ll want to make sure that you, your staff and the school are well protected legally. We’ll share some of our experiences and the best ways to make sure you don’t wind up in court.

Relating to the Rest of the Campus
They just don’t understand. Music schools have special needs that other departments don’t share. We’ll explore some of the best ways to meet the challenges of working with non-music colleagues, including the central administration and other service units.

External Relations
You know how important it is to put your best foot forward when presenting yourself to the community. We’ll discuss ideas for increasing your visibility, promoting your image and attempting to change your positioning. We’ll also talk about development and fundraising issues and community interaction success stories.

The week-long Music Management Workshop includes the two-day Music Recruitment Workshop.

Music Recruitment Workshop: June 20 – 21, 2012

Especially intended for anyone concerned with music admissions, this program is an intensive two days of techniques and strategies for building music enrollment. Our experts will cover many of the topics you’ll want to explore.

Proactive Recruitment Strategies
We’ll discuss successful tactics for developing the prospect file and applicant pool, along with intervention techniques to fine tune the profile of your incoming class. Data management software, audition days, college fairs and other techniques will be explored to help you create your own recruitment plan.

Social Media and Recruitment
We’ll dive into the world of social media, discussing Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more and how it affects recruitment plans, implementation and communication with your prospects.

Financial Aid
Often, the “clincher” in deciding which school a student attends is the depth of his or her financial aid package. We’ll consider possible sources, strategies and packaging as well as the importance of leveraging scarce resources within your department.

The two-day Music Recruitment Workshop is one segment of the week-long Music Management Workshop.
