About

Originally from Highland Park, IL, Peter Kupfer received a B.A. in German Studies, Computer Science, and Music from Amherst College in 2001. After spending a year in Berlin on an IIE-Fulbright Fellowship researching Wagner reception in the GDR, Peter entered the Ph.D. program in Musicology at the University of Chicago.  He is currently writing his dissertation on Soviet musical comedies of the 1930s, which is based in part on materials gathered during six months of Fulbright-Hayes sponsored research in Russia in 2008.

At the University of Chicago, Peter has taught a variety of undergraduate courses, including surveys of 18-20th century music history and a seminar on Russia and Soviet film music.  His research interests include Russian/Soviet music, film music, music and politics/ideology, and 19th century German music.  In addition to his teaching at the University, Peter is also the director of music theory at Midwest Young Artists (MYA), a youth music institute based in Highwood, IL.  As a bassoonist, Peter has performed with the Amherst College Orchestra, the Humboldt University Student Philharmonic, the North Suburban Symphony, the University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Chicago’s New Music Ensemble.
