About
Cathy Ann Elias is an Associate Professor in the School of Music at DePaul University.
She began her serious musical studies at the Preparatory Division of the Juilliard School, and received her undergraduate degree in performance (viola) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
She received a Master of Arts from the State University of New York at Binghamton in Music Theory focusing on Bartok, Schoenberg, and Kandinsky. She also holds a Master of Arts in Library Science and a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Chicago.
Her current research focuses on two areas: compositional process in 16th- century Franco-Flemish composers' masses, and performance practice based on Medieval and Renaissance Italian literary sources. She has published in journals such as Early Music: "Musical Performance in 16th-century Italian literature: Straparola's 'Le piacevoli notti.'" Other publications include chapters in books by Routledge Press: "Mid-Sixteenth-Century Chanson Masses, A Kaleidoscopic Process" in Honey Meconi ed., Early Musical Borrowings, and Gloria Allaire ed., The Italian Novella, "Sercambi's Novelliere and Croniche as Evidence for Musical Entertainment in the Fourteenth Century."
Cathy Ann also has a special interest in popular music. She teaches a class on the Beatles.
