Graduate Assistantships

The DePaul School of Music announces graduate assistantships for the 2017-18 academic year in the areas of theory and aural training. All graduate applicants may apply by completing our graduate assistantship in musicianship application. In addition, non-composition majors will be required to take an exam in theory on the day of their audition.

The theory exam will consist of:
  • Completion of a figured bass that includes secondary chords. You will be asked to notate all chords in four-part harmony, using appropriate voice leading.
  • Analysis of 19th century harmony as found in a chamber work by Brahms.
  • Early 20th century vocabularies: brief questions on alternative scales, set theory, and classic 12-tone technique.
